Savouring the Hoyo de Monterrey Chronicles. A blend of history and quality that had a big impact on the cigar industry.
The World of Hoyo de Monterrey: A Tale of Tradition and Taste
When one thinks of Cuban cigars, images of expert craftsmanship, rich flavors, and a tradition steeped in history come to mind. In this illustrious world, Hoyo de Monterrey stands as a symbol of exceptional quality and heritage. Tracing its roots back to the fertile lands of San Juan y Martínez in the heart of the Vuelta Abajo region, this brand owes its birth to the Hoyo de Monterrey plantation. Founded in 1860 by José Gener, a name synonymous with the brand, its entrance proudly proclaims its legacy: “Hoyo de Monterrey. José Gener. 1860”. This spot, blessed with rich soil along the riverbanks, set the stage for what would become a cigar legend.
Our story begins with Don José Gener y Batet, a Spanish immigrant who, at the tender age of thirteen in 1831, set foot in Cuba. Working his way up from his uncle’s plantation, he eventually opened his own cigar factory in Havana, producing the La Escepción line. His success enabled him to acquire a tobacco farm in the famed Vuelta Abajo in 1865, creating the Hoyo de Monterrey brand. The brand’s name, translating to “the Hole of Monterrey,” aptly describes the topographical concavity ideal for premium tobacco cultivation.
The brand quickly gained popularity, especially in the British market, making Gener’s factory one of Cuba’s largest. Upon Gener’s passing in 1900, his daughter, Lutgarda Gener, skillfully took the reins, continuing the family legacy for another three decades. In 1931, a strategic shift saw the Gener family selling their cigar brands to focus on sugarcane, marking the entry of Fernández, Palicio y Cía. This acquisition also brought in brands like Punch and Belinda, expanding the factories portfolio.
The 1940s saw innovation with the introduction of the Le Hoyo series, laying the groundwork for future icons like the Davidoff cigar line. Fernando Palicio, following the death of his business partner Ramón Fernández, became the sole proprietor, and by 1958, his brands accounted for a significant 13% of all Havana cigar exports.
The Home of Excellence: Hoyo de Monterrey Cigar Factory
The Hoyo de Monterrey Cigar Factory isn’t just a manufacturing hub; it’s a repository of history and culture. Home to the Hoyo de Monterrey Museum, it offers enthusiasts a rare glimpse into the world of antique cigars and cigar-related artifacts, capturing the essence of the Cuban cigar industry’s rich heritage.
Hoyo de Monterrey’s cigars are known for their distinct flavor profiles, evolving over time to cater to varying palates. From the robust and earthy (like the new Monterreyes no4) to the smooth and creamy (like the Serie Le Hoyo), each cigar offers a unique tasting experience.
Noteworthy among these are the Double Coronas, known for their length and ring gauge, offering a long, satisfying smoke. The Hoyo de Depute, with its shorter stature, provides a quicker yet rich experience. The Hoyo de San Juan and Hoyo de Rio Seco, each with their unique dimensions and blends, stand out for their balanced and nuanced flavors.
Hoyo de Monterrey has also produced an array of regional and limited editions, each a collector’s delight. These editions, like the Double Coronas Gran Reserva and the Epicure No.2 Reserva, are celebrated for their exclusive aging treatment and are highly sought after by connoisseurs and collectors worldwide.
The Hoyo de Monterrey factory doesn’t just produce its own line; it has been the birthplace of other prominent brands, notably Davidoff. This intermingling of brands under one roof has led to a cross-pollination of expertise and traditions, enriching the overall quality.
The DOP of the Tobacco Growing Region
The Denominación de Origen Protegida (DOP) of the tobacco growing region for Hoyo de Monterrey is crucial. This designation ensures that the tobacco used in Hoyo de Monterrey cigars is sourced from the most fertile lands, adhering to strict quality and origin standards. This DOP status is a testament to the brand’s commitment to excellence and authenticity. The Serie Le Hoyo is a noteworthy mention here since for those cigars all leaves (filler, binder and wrapper) come from the same plantation, a practice which is not very common since wrapper leaves are not easy to come by.
For me Hoyo de Monterrey is not just a brand; it’s a testament to the art of cigar making. From its historical roots to its flavor profiles and its commitment to quality, it stands as a beacon for cigar lovers worldwide.
