Exploring the Exquisite Craftsmanship and Rich Heritage of Edmundo Dantes Cigars.
Hello dear reader, it seems like I enjoy the comfort of your inbox more than I thought, especially since I have so many things to share with you.
Today we are going to set our sights on a not so common brand of Habanos, Edmundo Dantes.
It was named after the protagonist of Alexandre Dumas’ classic, “The Count of Monte Cristo,” and since its inception, Edmundo Dantes has carved a niche for itself among aficionados, offering a great blend and a taste profile that even though it’s not completely new it’s unique in some ways..
The roots of Edmundo Dantes can be traced back to the pre-revolution era of Cuban cigar history, though the brand as we know it today came into formal existence in 2007. Before the Cuban Revolution of 1959, the Cuban cigar industry was flourishing, marked by an abundance of brands and a global reputation for excellence. The Edmundo Dantes brand name, however, was not formally established during this period. Instead, it faded along with the sands of time but was not completely forgotten.
Cuba’s fertile soil and ideal climate conditions contributed to the production of some of the finest tobaccos in the world and it still does to this day. The cigars were handcrafted by skilled torcedores, whose expertise was passed down through generations, ensuring a level of quality and taste that aficionados appreciated making the Cuban taste profile a goal to which new world cigars only dreamt of reaching. Edmundo Dantes, even if it’s not a well known brand has always presented itself to the highest standards
The rebirth of Edmundo Dantes happened in 2007 as a regional brand, specifically created for the Mexican market. Its launch was a collaborative effort between Habanos S.A., the governing body of Cuban cigars, and its Mexican distributor, Importadora y Exportadora de Puros y Tabacos (IEPT). The brand was conceived to celebrate the long-standing tradition and appreciation of fine cigars in Mexico, serving as a bridge between Cuban heritage and Mexican cigar culture. Those are the stories I’ve heard, at least. If we take away the marketing make-up, what I see is a very inspired importer that brought back to life a brand that would only be available in Mexico after 2007. This was sure to make aficionados crave it even more. Add to the fact that all Edmundo Dantes releases were absolutely great so it was a guaranteed success
The brand’s portfolio is distinguished by a rich and complex flavor profile and each cigar is meticulously crafted using the finest Cuban tobaccos from the Vuelta Abajo region.
The flavor journey of an Edmundo Dantes is a symphony of cedar and spice. These two notes, as common as they may seem, are the signature notes of the Montecristo brand. That is why Edmundo Dantes is considered to be a sister brand to Montecristo, sharing the same profile but with more strength. Even the brands logo is very similar to Montecristo
The first release of Edmundo Dantes in 2007 was a significant event in the cigar world. The first cigar, the Edmundo Dantes Conde 109, was a Regional Edition for Mexico, limited to a production of 600 boxes of 25 cigars each. This limited edition quickly garnered attention for its impeccable smoking experience. Hence the name, it is a 109 vitola de galera 50x184mm, one of my favorite vitolas that also features a “cabeza tumbada”. If you want to learn more about the “cabeza tumbada” let me know in the comments.
In 2008, 600 more boxes were produced and I’m guessing these didn’t satisfy the demand either.
The Conde 109 features a Medium - full-bodied profile, starting with a creamy smoothness that gradually evolves into richer, more robust flavors. Tasting notes include a distinct peppery spice at the outset, mellowing into a blend of roasted nuts, dark chocolate, and a subtle sweetness reminiscent of caramel.
Following the success of the Conde 109, Edmundo Dantes continued to release the Conde 54, adding to the brand’s prestige. This was launched in 2011 and only 1000 boxes were produced.
The Edmundo Dantes Conde Belicoso, released in 2016, stands out a bit more for me. This cigar was another Regional Edition for Mexico, produced in a limited quantity of 1,000 boxes of 25 cigars each. As you already know, very few of these cigars were produced, and in my opinion, it's an honor that you can still find some to enjoy if you try.
The Conde Belicoso offers a slightly different flavor profile, catering to those who appreciate a bit more intensity. Initial draws reveal a robust blend of spices, which gradually transition into richer notes of espresso, dark chocolate, and a hint of sweetness. The finish is long and satisfying, leaving a lingering taste of toasted almonds and leather. An absolutely gorgeous experience
An Edmundo Dantes cigar is a journey in itself, especially since they are now between 8 and 17 years old, offering an evolving palette of flavors that captivate the senses from start to finish. While enjoying the Conde Belicoso recently, I was happy to experience an explosion of tasting notes. Everything you can imagine from cedar, coffee, cocoa, dried fruit and they worked together to build a long lasting finish which was an absolute delight.
But…the legacy continues as aficionados are eagerly waiting for another Edmundo Dantes regional edition from the Mexican importer.
In our world, where history, art and impeccable flavors intersect, Edmundo Dantes represents excellence, a brand that promises and delivers an unforgettable smoking experience.
I’m guessing this is me saying “Please” to IEPT to hurry up with another fantastic Edmundo Dantes release.
